Hypnobirthing teaches deep relaxation techniques enabling you to remain calm and focused during birth. It is based on sound principles of physiology and the way a womans body is designed to give birth. The classes offered by Little Owl also teach what to expect during pregnancy and birth, and what decisions expectant parents may need to take.
Hypnobirthing is based on the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, an English physician, whose work 50 years ago, provided the foundations of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT).
Dr Dick-Read concluded that fear and tension was responsible for 95 per cent of labour pain, which could be eliminated through relaxation techniques.
More recently the work of Michelle Leclaire O'Neill and Marie Mongan in the US in developing techniques for relaxation, and Michel Odent in France and the UK with his work on home birth and birthing pools, have encouraged thousands of women to take control of their birth experience.
Many people expect hypnobirthing to be a vague and rather un-scientific thing, mostly due to the name. However, it is completely based on a sound understanding of the body of a woman and the mental and physical processes she goes through in birth. It is recognised and recommended by many midwives.
Hypnobirthing works with the mothers natural ability to give birth, challenging the widespread belief that severe pain is a normal part of birth.
Little Owl Hypnobirthing teach the KG method, which was developed by Katharine Graves. Katharine was taught by Marie Mongan and has since developed her own course which is more UK based.
70% of Hypnobirthing births are unmedicated (Statistic from the American HypnoBirthing Institute in 2007)
